South Africa | Localising Just Transition in Africa

Dr Ronald Tombe has been invited to contribute to the Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship’s Environmental Humanities Project at a “Localising Justice in Africa’s Just Transition” seminar. The seminar is part of the Project’s ongoing Engaging Environmental Publics Seminar Series.

South Africa’s Just Transition plan has been lauded as exemplary, with many countries in the global south following its lead. However, its program has been criticised for not sufficiently engaging with local communities in its planning process. The seminar brings together academic experts interested in thinking about Africa’s place in the Just Transition plan to reflect on the role of communities in South Africa’s move towards a just and sustainable green future. It asks what justice means for historically disadvantaged communities who disproportionately bear the net adverse effects of rapid change in a transition continent and who defines justice, which lies at the Centre of the Just Transition program.

The organisers have approached Dr Tombe to inform seminar attendees about how technology can be leveraged to address the challenges plaguing Africa’s Just Transition. The seminar will be held at the end of November 2024.

Dr Tombe is a lecturer and the Program Coordinator for the African Institute of Indigenous Knowledge System (AIIKS) node at Kisii University, Kenya.
