Updated: Aug 6

Transdisciplinarity in collaboration for Early Career Researcher development in Africa, 26-28 June 2024 in Kumasi, Ghana

Call for Participation

The Economic, Engineering, Governance and Water Clusters of Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship (FAR-LeaF), University of Pretoria, South Africa, in collaboration with DIPPER Laboratory of the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering (FECE), is pleased to announce her network of, cluster training workshop. The workshop will take place from 26th – 28th June 2024 at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana.

Background

Africa is one of the continents threatened by climate change and other global challenges that need a transdisciplinary approach to tackle the problem and adapt for sustainable development. Rising temperatures and extreme weather events threaten the health and food security of humans in Sub-Saharan Africa. The Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship (FAR-LeaF) programme aims to develop leaders with transdisciplinary skills for application-oriented research that can help tackle the continent's challenges.

The FAR-LeaF programme funds postdoctoral research projects and offers a mentoring platform for fellows' career and personal development. The development of transdisciplinarity skills of researchers is urgent and critical. The current trend of impactful research demands the involvement of more than one discipline and stakeholders to achieve the expected outcome. Moreover, emerging challenges such as climate change are global and transboundary and can only be effectively addressed using a transdisciplinary approach. There is a gap in the transition of institutions in Africa from Multidisciplinary research to transdisciplinary research, and FAR-LeaF is working to bridge the gap.

The three-day training workshop will introduce early career researchers to strategies for developing a transdisciplinarity collaborative approach in research. It is obvious that a lot of young career researcher are lost and would hardly find their foothold on any career projectile. The workshop will leverage the expertise of mentors and supervisors to aid participants in developing career plans, enhancing their presentation and writing skills, and deliberating on pathways to move research to action that addresses the challenges of the African continent.

The Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship (FAR-LeaF), a network of clusters training workshops by the Economic, Engineering, Governance and Water Clusters, will strengthen the leadership capacity of fellows and early career researchers.

Objectives

  1. To bring together experts (mentors and supervisors), FAR-LeaF fellows and other early career researchers wactive inransdisciplinary research.

  2. Enhance presentation and writing skills among participants.

  3. Develop AI utilization in research potential among participants

  4. Develop research toonction pathways to address the economic, health a,nd food security challenges in Africa.

  1. Personal and professional development plans for participants to achieve their career goals in transdisciplinary research.
